The YRM partnership was founded in 1944 by F.R.S.Yorke (a pioneer of modernism in Britain), Eugene Rosenberg and Cyril Mardall. An early routine European modern style gave way to an espousal of the Chicago style. Their rebuilding of St Thomas’s Hospital (1963) proposed an open ‘campus’ layout of rectangular buildings arranged at right angles. A ‘house style’ emerged here, with the white tiles used in the cubic ward block and linear nurses’ home being employed extensively in YRM’s buildings of the late 1960s, for example, at Warwick University. Their airport oeuvre ranges from the black, steel-framed Cargo Agents’ building and offices at Heathrow, to Gatwick, where the elegant, patrician architecture serves contemporary society perfectly.
